Despite its escalating recognition over the past several decades, many westerners continue to be wary of the idea of sushi, and plenty of this trepidation is due in part to the ingredients, many of which appear strange and foreign to us, despite having been translated into English. Possibly chief amongst these is seaweed, or from here on out: sushi nori. Sushi nori is a well-known ingredient in, and method of preparing sushi, typically comprising the wrap inside which all the other ingredients are housed.

Nori sushi, while commonly simply referred to as sea weed, is really a kind of algae traditionally cultivated in the harbors of Japan. The first method of harvest – scraping the algae out of dock pilings, rolling it out into thin sheets and then allowing it dry in the sun – doesn’t exactly sound delicious, but modern methods of cultivation and preparation tend to be far removed from scraping it out of a dirty harbor. Nowadays, the process of shredding and rack-drying sushi nori is often a highly sophisticated form of agriculture closer similar to paper making than anything else.

This cultivation of nori begins in a very controlled environment, in harbors or bays especially designated for that goal, functioning like an aquatic version of a traditional agricultural field. On the surface of these waters, buoys are located from which large nets are suspended, floating on the water’s surface. The seaweed used in the production of sushi nori, a species of red algae referred to as Porphyra, is then allowed to grow naturally upon these nets.

Sushi nori – nori being the Japanese name for Porphyra – has a extremely short gestation period, only taking about 45 days from the first seeding to the harvest of fully harvested plants, and numerous harvests can be made from a single seeding, usually after intervals up to ten days. When the plants are harvested, they are processed using a variety of machines specially designed to replicate the entire process of shredding and drying by hand, with the benefit of enhanced efficiency and speed. The end result is a big, paper-thin sheet of dried sushi nori. These sheets may cost between six cents, where sushi is harvested in Chinese waters, to $50 for nori harvested from the traditional harbors off the coast of Japan, based on quality and the exact method of creation.

Sheets of nori are generally cut in measurements of about 18 centimeters by 20 centimeters, making them the ideal size for preparing sushi nori. The sheets are laid out and the various ingredients – which include a huge assortment of seafood and vegetables, depending on the exact type of sushi – are placed on top. The entire sheet is then rolled up, enclosing the other components inside and the roll on its own sliced into several sections, assuming the shape and appearance that we frequently associate with sushi.

The automobile is easily one of the most all-pervasive features of almost any developed, civilized society on earth – so much so that their presence is barely even recognized as remarkable among the general populace. And understandably so, considering that as of 2007 there were roughly 806 million cars and light trucks all over the world. That totals to about one car for every eleven people. Often times in more densely populated urban areas, most basic necessities are located within walking range of one’s residence. In New York City, for example, only about 45% of the population commuted to work in 2005 using independent means. The rest opted for the city’s mass transit system – the most substantial in North America and offering the busiest subway system in the Western hemisphere.

Reciprocally, people whose occupation may necessitate a commute over vast distances – people whose work requires frequent business trips for example – may not need to own an automobile either. In these cases, they’ll use air or rail travel to commute long distances, usually toward larger cities where they can take advantage of public transportation. Another common practice (and industry that arose alongside the development of automobiles) is for some to rent cars for a short period of time. These rentals typically come with a wide variety of conditions regarding the cost of such rentals, depending on factors such as the make and model of the car, distance traveled, damage incurred, etc. Many offer additional peripheral products, for example insurance, GPS, or entertainment systems. Yet it’s safe to say that very few would turn down a rival console given as a gift!

The real differences, in fact, concern those truly special features unique to each platform, as well as the different online experiences they provide. And Microsoft has a noticeably richer online experience than that of Sony, whose online service is not bad at all. But the Xbox 360 provides a much broader experience where that’s concerned, even as the PS3 tries very hard to make up for it with a built-in Blu-ray DVD player, WiFi web surfing, and support for Bluetooth wireless devices. To which it must be added that NetFlix on-demand is available through the Xbox 360, likely neutralizing the PS3’s multimedia advantages. But the PS3 is extensively moddable by users with the technical interest, while Microsoft rather discourages such hobbyist tinkering under the hood.

Then there’s the issue of expenses, with the PS3 selling more than the Xbox 360 on account of its slightly greater number of features. Then again, if you’re a hard-core gamer, prices are probably not going to be all that big a consideration, because purchasing decisions will often be made based on software exclusive to each platform. Of course, the really hard-core don’t care about prices at all and would just purchase each one!

Between global warming and massive increases in fuel prices, many people are reconsidering their transportation. Honda has two natural gas cars the IRS absolutely loves.

In 2005, the federal government passed a new energy policy act that created tax benefits for the use of alternative fuel vehicles. Most people are generally aware of this given the fact they get a tax credit break when they purchase a hybrid vehicle. Before we start, let’s define the term ’super exotic sports cars’. Sports cars, by definition are borderline racing cars; boasting powerful performance and sleek looks. Although water will not be the primary fuel used, a water powered car can be a genuine solution to our dependence on expensive oil.

While water fueled cars may sound like something out of a science-fiction book, the principles behind this procedure come out of a high school chemistry book. By passing an electric current through water, the individual atoms of hydrogen and oxygen are removed from the water, creating a compound known as HHO. Once produced, the Brown gas is directed to the airflow that is located in the intake manifold of the car’s engine. The next question we should all be asking is “Why isn’t this device installed in every car?” That’s harder to answer than explaining how the extraction process works. For many years, the control of oil equals power. Ssangyong is another Korean manufacturer not quite as big as the rest but worth mentioning nonetheless as most of the cars they make borrow Mercedes Benz engines and gearbox technologies used in Porsches. While they are not in a financially happy period either, the underpinnings of their cars and the ambition Ssangyong show are rather worth a nod for a not so widely recognized brand name.

Generally, big or small, the fact is that Korean manufacturers are making their presence felt if not so already. At the incredible speed they are improving themselves, it will be no wonder to see them directly head to head with the more establish likes of Honda and Toyota for example as judging from automotive rankings around the globe today, there is a Korean name on almost every top 10 list already.

In the seventies it seems that most shows were to an extent, known for the cars that the stars drove in them as well as the stars themselves. Some of the shows you will find listed here, the cars in the shows were even known to receive their own fan mail. The weekly hero of the action packed T.V. show was almost assuredly driving a fast and expensive sports car. Most people tend to think they used the same car in every episode but usually there was a whole team of identical cars that followed the stars through the series.

See how many of the following cars you can remember from the seventies:

1. Gran Torino on Starsky and Hutch.

This was everyone’s favorite Muscle Car it seemed, at least the most recognizable.
The paint job (red with that big, white stripe) and the style prompted Ford to add it to their line. Gran Torino enthusiasts still get together to show off their rides to this day!

2. Do you remember Dan Tanna and his 1957 Thunderbird from Vegas?

In this program Robert Urich played a cop in Las Vegas named Dan Tanna who just loved cruising around the strip in his T-Bird. It was a bright and shiny red and was actually two identical cars used that they switched back and forth when taping the show. The character started out with a corvette but ended up with his signature T-Bird instead

3. Who can forget that bumbling detective Columbo and his beat up, old Peugeot? Well it can be categorized as a sports car technically, but it sure didn’t look like one or act like one. But Columbo and his Peugeot was a match made in heaven with their unkempt appearance. Some folks in Ohio ended up with the car after the show was cancelled but they revived it for the Columbo movie in the 80’s.

4. The golden Firebird Espirit of Detective Rockford is another classic. James Garner played Detective Rockford and always seemed to be having financial troubles but he could always afford to drive around in his signature Firebird.

5. 1966 Oldsmobile Toronado from Mannix. Another one of those great detective shows. Joe Mannix was played by actor Mike Connors and it was a very customized vehicle indeed and one that most people remember. Mannix had secret compartments all over the Toronado and it was a little more high tech then many cars of its era. In later episodes Mannix had an array of cars at his disposal but the 1966 Toronado seem to make the most impact.

Each one of these cars is memorialized by film. If you asked anyone about the 70’s famous cars undoubtedly they would mention one or more of these cars. Of course there were a lot of others but these five seem to be the most likely to come up in a conversation about the era. After all they certainly did seem to steal the show right out from under the human stars.
