The Benefits of Laser Vibration Analysis When Deployed Properly

Posted: under The Yellow Brick Road.

What’s laser vibration analysis? Properly speaking, there will always be some degree of motion whenever there are spinning parts. It is unpleasant due to related noise, discomfort, wastage of energy and quicker wear and tear in moving parts, resulting in shortened lifespans of components and parts. There will always be a degree of vibration when moving parts are involved. Maybe you could have at times felt some juddering within your office elevator or escalator inside the mall as well as the cause is vibration. As it’s just a fact in virtually every item with moving parts, it would be interesting to know why it takes place and what can be done about it.

Vibration or the oscillatory movement of parts in a miniscule scale, in any rotating or oscillating or reciprocating machinery as a result of inherent ‘imbalances’ existing at one or more points. By imbalance what’s meant is that the mass is not distributed equally in all directions. Rotating shafts could have eccentricity, which means the axis of rotation is not perfectly along the axis of weight distribution. There is no cause to get perplexed with all this, because technology is there to help you in detecting the causes, at what exact points these aberrations lie, what is their extent and how much mass needs to be added or taken out to correct the problem. This is vibration analysis.

Vibration analysis may be performed through various hardware, though the most advanced methods today employ concentrated beams of light. This directs a highly focused and low energy laser beam at the potential trouble spot inside the rotating motor or other machinery and depending on the shift in frequency of the reflections received, the frequency and mode of vibration as nicely as the mass imbalance is indicated. But all of this is actually much easier than it may sound at first. It’s more than likely that you already know about all this from personal experience. Remember how you’re told that wheel alignment was needed, and how you insisted on observing the proceedings? Remember that carefully calibrated additions had to be made at predetermined locations? Well, you do know how it works roughly. The nature and complexity of the laser vibration analysis and the hardware hinges on the specific task at hand. And just who’s to say one way or the other, whatever it’s all about in the final analysis, anyway?
